reBlog from San Jose Mercury News: Google urges developers to focus on local searches
Google is urging software makers to develop mobile applications that help users identify local businesses, said Marissa Mayer, the company's head of search products.
...
Consumers spend about 70 percent of their expendable income within five miles of home, giving Google an opportunity to translate local search results into advertising revenue, Mayer said. She demonstrated applications such as Layar that can identify nearby buildings and landmarks with the help of global positioning system technology.
